Minors (children and adolescents under 18 years of age) comprise nearly a quarter of the U.S. population, and they can easily become separated from their parents or guardians during a disaster. Shelters should be adequately prepared to receive, serve, and supervise unaccompanied minors until minors can be turned over to the proper authorities or parents/guardians. Care for minors includes adequate coordination with community partners such as schools and parents to ensure that individual and organizational plans are in place.
