In 2006, NACCHO surveyed chronic disease and primary care practitioners to (1) understand the scope of mental health services provided by local health departments; and (2) identify existing collaborations between mental health and public health entities. These case studies are examples of local health departments that have taken a public health approach to addressing the mental health needs of their communities. Each case study describes the jurisdiction and population served, mental heath-related programs, collaborations, unique components of the programs, barriers and challenges, successes, and future plans.
