Embedded at the community level, local health departments (LHDs) play a critical role in ensuring adolescent sexual health and well-being. They conduct HIV and STI testing, distribute condoms and condom-compatible lubricants, dispense contraceptives, connect young people to behavioral health and substance use services, work to dispel stigma and misperceptions of HIV and STIs, and implement and support sexual health education in partnerships with schools. However, working in the adolescent health field can be challenging, as resources and champions can be hard to come by. Read the following “stories from the field” to learn how seven local health departments are working to improve adolescent sexual health in their communities.
