This training material is designed to strengthen the capacity of an environmental health professional when responding to a public health emergency. Twenty-two environmental health professionals across the country were interviewed to learn how they dealt with actual disasters and emergencies. This CD-Rom reflects their field-based experiences and relates their stories to eight Environmental Health Core Competencies (organizational knowledge and behavior, collaboration, information gathering, data analysis, problem solving, record keeping, communication, and education). The competencies provide a framework so that environmental health professionals can be effective in all types of disasters and emergencies.

The module consists of an introduction and eight lessons; each lesson focuses on one core competency and is divided into an overview, stories and action steps, lessons learned, quiz questions, and complementary resources. Audio is provided for most screens, and a transcript of the entire module may be printed. Each lesson can stand alone as an individual training unit, or all lessons can be completed in one session. The eight lessons can be viewed in any order, although they are presented with a logical flow based on the sequence of activities that would likely take place during a response effort.
